Day 2
Our first stop today was the Hope Nursery School. We were pleasantly surprised by the opulent vegetable garden. The difference from last year was enormous! There were mango and papaya trees, cucumbers and okras. The okra plant is called “old lady fingers” by the locals. The similarity is striking.
Next we were warmly greeted by the pupils who enthusiastically sang songs and showed us their notebooks with exercises. We visited the different class rooms and each one was a pleasant surprise. Afterwards we had a meeting to make some decisions about the school.
Final stop at the school was the room we call the dream class. Here we found lots of toys (some broken, some not) and a few animal surprises! Nelly the stuffed mouse from the second preschool class in De Rank will have some friends. We surmounted our fears and got to work to clean the room. The dream class will be turned into a library for the whole school. We immediately called the carpenters and put in our first orders for cupboards.
We ended our day at the market in Brikama. We bought supplies like brooms and bowls to use at the Hope Nursery School. After plenty of negotiations we arrived at the lodge exhausted but with everything we needed.
