Day 5: First school day
First school day
First school day, and we were late straight away. Not far from the school we met a boy who was trying to get his sister to the health centre on his bicycle. Our bus suddenly turned into an ambulance. We thought the girl’s foot was broken, but the health centre could only give her pain medicine (no RX or plastering room).
We could hear the preschoolers in their newly painted en cleaned classrooms from far away. We were all eager to start. We started off the day with a Miffy story and then did corner work. We scored big. The three teachers were given a very quick workshop on corner work, under the watchful eye of the headmaster who pointed out to them that they had to be very careful with the newly donated materials.
In the afternoon we separated. Lieve, Ingrid and Annelies went to the health centre. They were happy to see that the organisational changes they had introduced last year, were still in place. After adding 3 large boxes of medical supplies to the shelves, they went back to the school, where Sofie, Griet, Karen and Ina were very busy colouring in the remaining drawings on the wall. While they were painting the local youngsters came by to help and chat.
At 4.30 pm we started cleaning the storage room. When moving a cupboard, we found a whole nest of cockroaches. We screamed loudly! Luckily Karamon was around to take control of the situation (phase 1 was declared). After a thorough cleaning we could put all the new educational materials away.
Meanwhile all the carpenters in Sifoe are working for us (book cases, book shelves, storing cupboards, desks and educational materials).
It was a very energizing day!
