On Monday morning we had a pleasant surprise. The structure we introduced last year in the Sifoe primary school, was still in place. We worked with two groups: Sofie, Lief, Annelies en Karen took over teacher Lamin’s class of preschoolers so he could check in other classes which pupils still needed uniforms. Ina, Griet and Ingrid submerged themselves in the primary school and attended lessons in the different grades. They observed attentively and gathered all the information they needed to get to work themselves the next day. A moving experience!
In the afternoon we delivered the first box of medical supplies bought in Belgium. Thanks to our preparatory work and Annelies’ (our pharmacist) professional explanations, the Sifoe health centre now has a functional pharmacy.
The rest of the team took the other rooms in hand, while in the labour ward a mother to be was looking forward to the arrival of her first child. We could not attend the birth because the consultation room was suddenly full of patients.
While Ina mopped the floor with the “door” open (inside joke) Sofie fitted an old man with a crutch, Lief dealt with a heavily damaged (or better put amputated) thumb, and Karen took care of some infected foot wounds. Meanwhile Griet, Annelies and Ingrid prepared the shed that would be used to install the solar panels. It had to be ready for the visit of the two possible installers the next day.
At 7.30 pm we arrived at the hotel, dirty but satisfied.
