Serrekunda
Today we went to Serrekunda. We followed a bumpy track to the Picca Nursery School. The teachers and children in this school were incredibly enthusiastic! Each class welcomed us with a song, which lead to several goosebumps moments.
Two puppets, Pipi and Birdie, introduced Miffy. Ingrid read the Miffy stories with heart and soul. The children learned about corner work and really enjoyed it: they diligently puzzled, drew, drove cars and did crafts. The movement games with Karen, Lief, Griet and Annelies put big smiles on all the faces. We filled cupboards with all the donated materials. We invested in paper, notebooks and pencils, which the headmaster bought himself. Before we left, we organised the book and games cupboard. There was one cupboard for the whole school! It was really nice to see how the children picked out books and brought them back when they were done.
We added to the school’s medicine cabinet. We were very impressed by the nurse’s wherewithal.
Kerrsering
We then left for the health centre at Kerrsering. The young nurse there could do with some help. We gave him medical supplies and thoroughly cleaned the building. He didn’t know what hit him: 7 women taking over and that on Valentine’s day!
With rumbling stomachs we drove to the Kerrsering apartment of Veronique and William Merckx, where we found Chicken Yassa on the table. Our drivers, Karamo and Lamin, joined us at the table and told us about Gambian customs.
To say it with the children’s words: Your friend is my friend. My friend is your friend.
‘YOUR FRIEND IS MY FRIEND, MY FRIEND IS YOUR FRIEND’
