Day 1
Today is the day. After waiting for a year, we could again leave for the Gambia. The weather report announced 38°. What a difference to Belgium.
All ready to go the 9 of us and our 18 filled to the brim suitcases arrived at Zaventem airport this morning. A new adventure awaits.
After a six hour flight we arrived at Banjul airport. We passed the corona virus check and then we could start queuing for customs. This brought the message home that we really were back in Africa! The airport doesn’t have room for 300 passengers and there is only one moving belt to get through customs.
After we had gathered all 18 suitcases and left the arrival hall, we were warmly greeted by Kalifa and Karamo. They helped us stack everything in the bus and then we were ready for the next stage of our trip.
We drove through the Gambian landscape for an hour and passed several known locations such as the Hope Nursery School medical post. We could already see some changes from a distance. We were very curious to see them up close and we felt anxious to get into the thick of it!
By the way: a big thank you to everyone who contributed to our project and gave us heart when we needed it.
